Ahhhh, the weekend is here! It’s time to enjoy a few days of hard-earned rest!

Although we design all week long at DuoParadigms, we often like to spend our free time away from work on the weekends still designing and working on fun personal projects for ourselves, family, and friends. For us, designing also helps us relax . . . especially when we can do it without a deadline!

This weekend’s DIY project share combines both a love for crafts and literature. Aren’t these roses beautiful?

It is easy to focus on wording and content when designing your website, but have you thought much about what your color palette is conveying about your organization?

Color is vital for every website, but it is especially important if you plan to reach an international audience. Whether you like it or not, your color choices might be influencing your site’s visitors.

Christian Arno, a writer for Hongkiat, a website that is based in Malaysia, has some tips on how to choose the right colors:

The choice of the right colour for a website is an important matter. We all know very well how colors can influence our instinctive reaction to places, products, even people. We know very well that, for example, many banks choose a blue background for their brand because it communicates a sense of trust. At the same time, we wouldn’t paint our bedroom black or bright red because we are aware that these are not colours which help us to relax, to say the least.

But when it comes to designing a website which has to tackle international markets, there are more considerations to be take in. Different colours have different meanings to different cultures. For example, while black in western countries is a sign of death, evil and mourning, in China it is the colour of young boys’ clothes. On the other hand, while white in Western culture represents marriage, peace, and medical help or hospitals, in China it stands for death and mourning. So, picking the right colour is not just a matter of appearance, it’s a matter of implicit messages and content.

The bread and butter of Pinterest is the repin feature. You can pin your little heart out all day long, but you’ll never grow your followers unless people are motivated to repin your postings.

Have you ever noticed that the pins which have better descriptions are often repinned more? Pinerly, a new Pinterest statistic tracker, did a study tracking food pins. The pins that were more descriptive had a far better reach.

More than likely, you have heard the old adage, "The customer is always right." But can this really be true?

More than likely, you have heard the old adage, “The customer is always right.” But can this really be true?

Seth Godin, one of the most successful marketers around, had some fascinating thoughts on the subject today:

The reason the customer is always right…

If you insist that they are wrong, they stop being your customer* (if given half a chance).

People spend their time and attention and money in places that make them feel valued.

*There’s nothing wrong with asking customers who are wrong to leave. Just be sure you do it on purpose.

Definitely good food for thought.

Have you ever managed to accidentally zoom a window in Outlook? This can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you can’t remember what keystroke caused the problem.

I had this happen to me just the other day as I was working. While it was somewhat nice at first to have large text in my composition window, it quickly grew irritating.

The solution can be found using the Zoom button:

I’m terrible when it comes to forgetting things when I travel. I normally spend part of the travel time, whether in the car or on a plane, trying to remember what I’ve inevitably forgotten. I rarely leave the same thing twice, so it’s always **fun** to figure out what I’ve left behind by accident once I unpack.

However, there’s one thing I never forget. . . my pillow.

I adore my pillow. It’s a well-used, well-worn, beloved memory foam pillow. We’re attached. At the head. Almost literally.

Because it’s memory foam, it is quite portable and can be squeezed into my carry-on when I fly. It’s easy. It’s convenient. And, ahem, it can be dangerous.

Like the time it “exploded” out at the TSA at the airport. (That was their word choice, not mine. Guess I forgot to warn them when they were rooting around, confiscating my can of buttercream frosting. But that’s another story.)

Where was I? Oh yes, the pillow.

Because I never leave home without it, my pillow is often my final line of defense against forgetting possessions. It’s been home to lots of odds and ends, things I’ve shoved in at the last minute.

So when I saw this adorable pillowcase idea from Amazing Mae, I knew this would be perfect for me to share with our readers as a weekend DIY project! I love the big initial!

Take some time to make one for a special child in your life.

Or for that absent-minded friend who needs extra pockets on her pillow just so she can shove in her last minute stuff!

We’re used to seeing odd things happen with technology, but the other day, we had a really random occurrence in DP land.

Melanie’s cat flipped her computer screen sideways.

Yep. In our case, instead of the dog eating our homework, it was a cat who stepped on Windows. Literally.

Melanie was working when her cat decided to join her, and hit the “perfect” combination of keystrokes and flipped the screen sideways.

Fortunately, this is a quick fix. So here’s how to do it, in case your cat ever flips your screen!

Press CTRL, ALT, and the Down Arrow keys simultaneously if your screen is completely upside down. If it’s just sideways, press the arrow in the direction you wish to turn the screen.

Depending on your computer, you might have to try pressing the keys all at once, or press CTRL, hold it down, then add ALT, hold it down too, and then hit the arrow button.
